Substantive
Editing:
For projects that need considerable reorganization and
rewriting. Editing includes whatever services are required to
develop accurate and logical content that is appropriate for the intended
audience. It involves an examination of the basic elements of manuscript
structure: pacing, voice, tone and subtext, a check for redundancies,
repetition of phrases, clichés, misplaced modifiers, shifts in agreement,
consistency, organization, flow, clarity, and several other things. It also includes
basic copyediting (see below). Substantive copyediting is performed
directly on a PC copy of the document, using MSWord's Track Changes tool,
which allows you the opportunity to see the changes, but produces a clean
copy ready for submission or personal use.
Basic Copyediting:
Includes a check
for errors of spelling, grammar, punctuation, and consistency of
style, and an evaluation of confusing and awkward writing techniques.
(It does not include a substantive
line-by-line editing, as described above.)
Proofreading:
An
already-copyedited document is examined one final time, checking for any
remaining errors and inconsistencies. Can include the proofreading of author's galley
copy before publication by a trade publisher or self-publishing venue.
Technical Editing:
Involves the editing, revision, or
writing of product user guides,
employee manuals, software manuals, brochures, medical articles for the lay
public, legal presentations and texts (written in language for the lay
public or for judges who prefer less legalese) and white papers. I
have extensive knowledge in both law (I am a certified paralegal) and
academic medicine (affiliated with those in academic medicine for many
years). I am experienced in rewriting
technical documents
for the lay public, in language they can understand.
Manuscript
Evaluation/Critique:
Involves the careful reading
and analysis of your fiction manuscript to discern its
strengths and weaknesses. A lengthy report is produced, with suggestions for improvement in areas such as your
plot, characterization, setting, use of conflicts, climax, point of view,
spelling, punctuation and grammar weaknesses, your format, etc. An evaluation can also be made of a non-fiction book, a
short story, essay, or any type of business document. Sometimes, an
objective point of view is exactly what you need! A reasonable flat fee is
charged for each project, depending upon the difficulty of the subject
matter and length of the manuscript, payable in advance. Understand that
it takes several hours to merely read a book-length manuscript,
especially one that has not been previously edited, and several hours to
do the writing of the critique.
Copywriting:
Involves the research of subject material and
the writing of the article, blog, website text or document. The writing may expand
and expound upon the rough draft of the original writer, in
order to establish the tone and style required. Includes
ghostwritten articles published under the name of the client.
Ghostwriting:
The writing of a book of fiction (any genre), nonfiction,
including memoirs, based upon material provided by the client.
May include considerable research for facts, statistics, recent
research studies or whatever other information is needed to
provide authenticity, accuracy, inspiration , credibility, and a
reader relationship that has the ability to create sales and, in
turn, author esteem.
Estimates:
FREE sample evaluation and price estimate:
For
most projects, I can estimate the number of hours required for the type of
editing needed, with an examination of the first several pages of an
article or the entire manuscript of a novel or two chapters and a synopsis of a
book-length
nonfiction manuscript. On some projects, the hourly rate/charge can be adjusted to
an agreed upon flat fee, as determined by the number of double-spaced
manuscript pages, the topic of the document, the amount of editing needed,
and time constraints (do you need an overnight or time-sensitive
editing for an article or business document? a deadline for submission to
an agent or publisher for a book-length manuscript?). With this information, I can usually estimate a
range; the final charge will not exceed the top figure of my estimate,
unless the author changes course or adds material.
The flat fee is based upon one editing of the highest quality possible.
Additional editing requires an added fee. There is no risk on your part for a free, no-obligation evaluation and
cost estimate.
For a firm job quote, I must see the
project in its entirety. I must see the entire fiction manuscript to
determine effectiveness of climax scene, last chapters, and the
presentation and complexity of the protagonist's problem.
Payment Structure:
For projects of any size and any degree of copyediting service, the
following payment structure is strictly applied ,after we have discussed
editing and payment options:

1/3 of projected total in advance, before copyediting
or writing begins

1/3 of projected total, before
second third of the project
is completed and delivered
-
Final amount, upon completion of the project, based on
actual time spent on project (this amount may be more or less than
the first two payments), paid in advance, before the completed
project is delivered
-
Where a flat fee for a
business project has been
negotiated, the same schedule applies: 1/3 up front, 1/3 before the
second third of the project is completed, and the final third upon
completion, before it is delivered.

Repeat and well-known
business clients
may pay entire amount (POD), after completion.
Types of Payment Accepted:
For most clients, payment is made through the use of a debit or credit card or
personal check to my account with PayPal; a
personal or bank draft (in US $$ only) is also
accepted.
For local and repeat clients
or major
corporations, a company/ personal check will be accepted in agreed upon
terms (POD) after work is completed. Most clients pay directly into
my PayPal account.
Credit Card and
Personal Check Transfer via PayPal: For the convenience of everyone, I
have established an account with PayPal.com, "a free
person-to-person payment service that makes sending money as
easy as sending e-mail." You may pay via a personal
check or with a credit or debit card on a secure server. Simply charge your credit
card for the exact amount you stipulate. The money is placed into my
account, and I begin my editing services. Within five minutes
or less,
both your needs and mine are satisfied. It is less
time-consuming than sending paper checks or making wire transfers. Unlike sending a check, which can take days to clear, PayPal
transactions clear instantly. The service is
absolutely FREE for consumers and a strict security policy is enforced.
The service has received a five-star rating from every major financial
journal (Forbes, Smart Money, etc.) and PC journals.
Purchased by e-Bay in 2002, it is the most
widely used service by small business and auction customers
internationally.

Copyright of
Original Material:
Your work of
fiction or nonfiction is "copyrighted" as soon as you write it, and
you have nothing to be concerned about, but you can use the "poor man's
copyright" method, by mailing yourself a dated copy of your
manuscript. Do not open the envelope, upon receipt. The postmark
on the package serves as your copyright and is legally binding. The use
of the ALT key plus "0169" on your numeric keypad makes a
copyright symbol, but agents and publishers consider a statement of copyright
or a symbol on your work as a sign of an amateur writer! Remember that ideas
and titles cannot be copyrighted, only the original writing that makes up the
document.
I have been in business for fifteen years and have worked with
writers/authors/clients from many countries. First-time book authors should
not be hesitant to attach their entire book manuscript for editing
consideration. I have read hundreds over the years and have no time to
appropriate original or edited material.
How
to Send Text:
MOST CLIENTS SEND ENTIRE
PROJECTS VIA AN E-MAIL ATTACHMENT. Upon receipt of the
project, I will contact you to present an estimate of costs and to discuss the
various editing, revision, and payment options.
I no longer take phone calls from potential/new clients for two reasons: when
I am working on another client's document or book project, I need
uninterrupted time and focus; and, I cannot make a judgment regarding time
required for a project or an estimate of cost without first seeing the
project with my eyes. That's because every writer has a wide variety of
writing mechanics' skills and both fiction and nonfiction books must have
industry standards of structure, style, and originality of material.
Policy:
At any time during the project, if either of us decide our relationship or
expectations differ from those assumed during the initial contact, either one
of us or both may cancel the project, AFTER payment has been made for work
completed. All copyediting or copywriting is fulfilled to the best of my
ability and according to the Code of Fair Practice.
